What is a T4?

A T4 is a document that provies important information needed for an employee to file his or her income tax returns for a full calendar year. It is a statement of remuneration paid. A T4 indicates what an employee was paid before deductions, as well as all applicable deductions (CPP, QPP, QPIP in Quebec only, EI premiums, and income tax).

Do I have to provide a T4 for my caregiver?

If you employ a caregiver in your home, such as a nanny, you must provide a T4. This is true even if he or she is only working part-time. As an employer, you are required to file this with the Canada Revenue Agency and provide your employee a copy by the last day of February.
